Superblessed with gratitude to spend the past weekend with my husband in the magical town of Kaapschehoop.
This quaint and quirky little town which is home to some amazing wild horses should definitely be on your bucket list.
We have been here before, but our time was limited to just an afternoon and we decided that we were sure to return. On the first visit, we were actually there to meet with De Wet Potgieter for advice on the marketing of my books and journals.
So… after working on Friday, we were quite excited to hit the road. The scenery surrounding this picturesque town is absolutely mesmerising and obviously enhancing our excitement.
As soon as we entered the town, a sense of calm filled our beings.
This town has no municipal services and the occupants are totally self sustained. They even sort out their own rubbish. I absolutely love this.
We stayed at Kaapschehoop Guesthouse (013 734 4161/082 450 3466) and thoroughly enjoyed it. All our needs were met in the most wonderful way. The rooms are decorated stylishly and adorned with pretty little flowers everywhere. For me it is always an added bonus to have a luxurious bath and ours were big enough for two. The comfortable bed makes for a great night’s sleep. Included in the price is a hearty, delicious breakfast prepared by Ria herself and with the added bonus of delicious cinnamon coffee.
Ria and Neels Bothma has been the owners for 23 years and this can be seen in every impeccable detail. We felt absolutely spoiled for choice and therefore, even decided to stay on Sunday night, leaving very early on Monday morning for my husband, B, to arrive back on site for a full days work.
We had so much fun walking through this peaceful town. I have never seen a town with so many exquisite gardens. Each garden seems to strive to be better than the next.
One feels surrounded by Mother Nature producing her absolute best with the greatest variety of flowers abloom. The occupants of the town is much the same as we met the most amazing humans.
By Friday evening the town had livened up to create a wondrous atmosphere and were filled to the brim with visitors. Cars and especially motorcycles from all over were parked just about everywhere.
We went to our favourite pub, Nagkantoor, which belongs to the famous De Wet Potgieter and his even more famous dog, Potlood.
De Wet is a well-known, retired journalist and author of many books. We had bought his book, ‘Kruisvuur’, on our previous visit and I have read it and it is impressive for sure. Famous authors and journalists visit here all the time and we were privileged to also meet Dana Snyman. I felt quite honoured to have my books and journals displayed right next to theirs for the weekend. De Wet has the best golden oldies music which obviously attracts a crowd.
We made quite a few new friends and I would like to mention and thank Faan Schoeman, travelling with one of his many motorcycles. He said he used to work hard – his son took over the working hard part – creating and designing custom made furniture for the high-end market. Just his way of positive speaking impressed me so much and I was reminded again at just how superblessed we are to have this experience of life… how awesome our experience is when we decide to be the creator of our own reality.
We met Merle, the lady with her amazing glass shop – Deliteful Glass Worx.
Wow! is all I can say. What an artist? We saw world class quality glass art being sold in this quirky little town. She also does not advertise as she mentioned that she finds social media a bit challenging. Therefore I feel it necessary to share her number which is 072 997 6761. An extraordinary human for sure – this is the message on her whattsap: A compassionate world begins with you. “Sometimes the little things in life are more than enough”.
On Saturday B booked us a Scoottour with Rudy – Kaapschehoop Xtreme – and we had the most awesome time.
We were transported into the forest high up on a mountain and had to scoot down the mountain on a two wheel scooter at high speed.
I cannot remember when last I had such an adrenalin rush! This is a must do!
What absolute fun it was! Lisa, a friend of Rudy, came to fetch us at the bottom of the mountain providing us with enough sugar in a well deserved cool drink next to a stunning little river.
Bohemian Groove Cafe is our absolute favourite restaurant and even has live music on Sundays.
The restaurant has the most delicious food and quite the variety where creativity is expressed in every way.
All the lettuces, leafy vegetables, edible flowers and herbs are grown in their very own vegetable gardens which came about in our worldwide epidemic times. They also bake the most exquisite cakes and other fantastic delectables. We had most of our meals here and can 100% recommend it.
From the ambiance either by candle light in the evenings or under the stunning trees in the garden – it is all an absolute treat. The kids are entertained with a clothing booth to play dress-up with many amazing costumes.
As we had an agenda to sell some of my books and journals, I am very pleased to report that I even did some business sitting on the grass when I met up with three beautiful ladies. They were sitting and chatting as I walked past with my books in hand and obviously we started chatting and they bought my books. As a ‘soul grower’, I absolutely love meeting my readers first hand and to be able to write them a personal message when signing my books warms my heart.
Our experience of Kaapschehoop will not be complete without mentioning the friend we met on our first visit, Daniella Kelly Potgieter. She sometimes helps out at the Gold Dust Trading store – well worth a visit as it has so much more than meets the eye – and this is where we met. What an extraordinary lady and this time we spend a little more time together and will remain friends for sure.
This past weekend we went back and also managed to hike to the waterfall…
Be superblessed beautiful beings of this stunning jewel of a town. We will surely be back…
as we were superblessed for sure!
PS: I LOST MY READING GLASSES IN KAAPSCHEHOOP… IF FOUND PLEASE GIVE IT TO DE WET POTGIETER AT NAGKANTOOR PUB. WOULD BE SUPERBLESSED WITH GRATITUDE INDEED.
